Is Opus Clip Free? The Free Plan's Limits (and a More Generous Free Alternative)

By Rachit Bhatia··Updated ·Edited by quso.ai's Editorial Team

Short answer: yes, Opus Clip has a free plan, and you can generate real AI clips on it without paying. But "free" comes with some specific limits that decide whether it actually works for you, and a couple of them catch people out. Here is exactly what the free tier includes, where it stops, and a free alternative that is more generous on the limits that matter. Every Opus Clip figure below was checked against opus.pro/pricing (US prices) on October 10, 2026; the cost of posting to X comes from Opus Clip's help center.

What Opus Clip's free plan includes

The Opus Clip free plan ("Free forever") gives you:

  • 60 credits per month, one credit is one minute of video processing, so that is 60 minutes of footage a month.
  • Rendered clips at up to 1080p.
  • Auto-reframe to vertical and AI captions with emoji and keyword highlighting.

For light use, that works. The catches are in what it leaves out.

Vizard's free plan has a similar shape: 60 credits a month, 720p exports and 3-day storage, but with the full editor. Our Vizard review has the rest.

The free plan's limits (the ones that catch people out)

  • Clips carry a watermark. Free exports are watermarked; removing it requires a paid plan.
  • Clips stop being exportable after 3 days. On the free plan, clips can no longer be exported after 3 days and media storage expires, so if you forget to download, you re-process and spend credits again.
  • No editor. You take what the AI produces; text and timeline editing start on a paid plan.
  • Import is limited to uploads and YouTube. On the free plan you can upload a local file (up to 10GB) or import a YouTube link. Other link sources are paid: Google Drive, Vimeo, Zoom and Rumble start on Starter, and Twitch, Dropbox, Loom, Facebook, LinkedIn and X start on Pro. Auto import of new videos from your YouTube channel also starts on Starter. So if your video lives on Vimeo, Twitch or a cloud drive, the free plan makes you download and re-upload it first.
  • No social posting. Posting to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels starts on Starter; posting to X and the scheduler start on Pro, and each X post costs 3 credits per X account.

Is Opus Clip's free plan enough?

It depends on how you work. If you make the occasional clip from a file on your computer or a YouTube video and you remember to download within three days, the free plan is fine for testing. If you post regularly, pull footage from links other than YouTube, or need watermark-free clips you can come back to, you will hit the paid tiers quickly. See the full breakdown in our Opus Clip pricing guide.

Only make YouTube Shorts? 2short.ai's free Starter plan gives 30 minutes of AI video analysis a month with every feature switched on, though its site lists no posting or scheduling, so you would still download each clip and upload it to YouTube, TikTok or Instagram yourself.

A more generous free alternative

Hitting the free-plan limits? quso.ai's free plan is built to be usable rather than a trial wall:

The headline difference is import. quso.ai lets you paste a link from YouTube, Vimeo, X, Facebook, Twitch, Rumble, Loom, LinkedIn, or Zoom, or import from Google Drive or Dropbox, on the free plan, on desktop and mobile. Opus Clip's free plan takes local uploads and YouTube links only; every other link source needs a paid tier. quso.ai's free plan also keeps your clips for seven days instead of three and publishes to TikTok. Both free plans add a watermark. Opus Clip renders free clips at up to 1080p versus quso.ai's 720p, so if raw resolution on the free tier matters most to you, that is the one row where Opus Clip's free plan leads.

Thinking about paying? Our OpusClip review covers what Starter and Pro add, where each one still falls short, and who should skip both and stay on a free plan instead.

Some AI video tools have no free plan at all. Crayo, which makes faceless Reddit-story and text-message videos rather than clips, starts at $19 for a month with no trial and no refunds; our review of Crayo AI covers what that buys.
